Nature Notes

Did you know, Oak Trees like the White Oak create important habitat for wildlife. Their acorns are eaten by deer, blue jays, woodpeckers, squirrels and chipmunks. There are lots of kinds of oaks, two easy ones to learn are red and white oak. Red oaks leaves have points and white has rounded lobes. The Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly is a strong flier with distinctive yellow and black striped markings on its wings and body. This common butterfly is called a “swallowtail” because they have long "tails" on their hind wings which look a bit like the long, pointed tails of swallows (a type of bird).  This butterfly’s life starts as an egg placed on the leaf high in a tree. The newly hatched caterpillar spends its time eating the leaves. Favorite trees include tulip tree, cherry, ash, aspen and birch.

Later caterpillars pupate into a chrysalis (resting stage) and then the adult butterfly hatches. The whole process takes about a month.

Many butterflies have very specific types of plants in which their larvae (caterpillars) feed upon, and you can attract them to your back yard by planting these host plants. The Black Swallowtail favors the carrot family plants, like fennel, parsley and dill.

Trillium's are spring wildflowers of undisturbed forests, where they grows in large colonies. Trillium's are easy to identify by its three large white petals, borne from a whorl of three broadly shaped leaves.

Did you know the Praying Mantis female will sometimes eat their mates? WEIRD!!!

- Don't forget to look for the googly eyes on every page and make a prediction as to who or what they belong to.
